U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

FDA, through its Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), regulates foods other than the meat, poultry, and egg products regulated by FSIS.

USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS) plays a leading role in research on food security and food security measurement in U.S. households and communities. USDA, ERS provides data access and technical support to social science scholars to facilitate their research on food security.

The time it takes food poisoning symptoms to start can vary. Illness often starts in about 1 to 3 days. But symptoms can start any time from 30 minutes to 3 weeks after eating contaminated food. The length of time depends on the type of bacteria or virus causing the illness.

If symptoms include vomiting or diarrhea, exclude food employee from food establishment. Must be symptom free for at least 24 hours before returning to work.

Poverty, unemployment and low wages lead to food insecurity. It's why Feeding America helps people experiencing food insecurity get the food and resources they need by increasing access to food in their communities.

At the state level, the projected rate of food insecurity among the overall population for 2021 is the lowest for North Dakota (8.1%) and highest for Mississippi (18.7%). North Dakota also had the lowest food insecurity rate in 2019 (6.7%).
