PLAIN DEALER, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1992- Thistledown to get longest season By BOB ROBERTS DEALER REPORTER A COLUMBUS -Thistledown is only a mailbag of affirmative votes away from making next season the longest in the track's 67-year history. With the blessing of the Ohio State Racing Commission and a promise of cooperation from fellow Buckeye thoroughbred permit holders, Thistledown will open on March 6 next year and race through Dec. 20, a total of 225 dates. The busiest the North Randall track has ever been was when it raced 218 dates in 1976, from Jan. 9 through Dec.
6. What has convinced Thistledown to stretch its 1993 season is a plan to mix live and satellite races with River Downs in Cincinnati and Beulah Park in suburban Columbus. While formal approval won't be sought until late this month, the three tracks with Thistledown serving as the hub facility will operate six days a week, alternating live and simulcast events to 14-race cards. The innovative plan was announced at a special meeting of the Ohio State Racing Commission held here yesterday to hear dates requests by all seven tracks, and to discuss a proposed increase in license fees. "We're willing to take the gamble on this plan," said Thistledown General Manager Mike Mackey.
"It may our (Thistledown's) bottom line." While the dates requests for the three thoroughbred tracks were tabled until Nov. 18 when the OSRC will hold its regular monthly meeting in Columbus, the state's four harness raceways were granted their 1993 schedules. Northfield Park was given permission to race 207 harness programs next year, from Jan. 1 through Dec. 29.
"It's the same schedule, the same pattern that we've run the last six years." said Northfield General Manager Tom Aldrich. Aldrich asked for 211 programs, but four of them in December would be matinees that conflict with Thistledown's proposed extended campaign. The OSRC voted to set the four dates aside until it approves Thistledown's request weeks. All that stands between. Ohio's thoroughbred tracks and the 14-race plan is a vote by the membership of the Ohio division of the Horsem*n's Benevolent and Protective Association.
Nearly 5,000 ballots were mailed out earlier this week. They are due back at HBPA headquarters in Columbus by Wednesday. "I think it will be approved," said Jim Benton, president of the Ohio HBPA.
